WELCOME TO

DR. OUTBOARD

Chances are your boat is not only a source of fun, it’s also one of your prize possessions and you want to keep it in good shape all the time. A well-maintained boat is a reliable machine that you can take out anytime you want with no reservations.

Outboard motors are the heart of the boat and to keep them running smooth, regular maintenance is recommended and advised. Different brands require different set of skills that only an experienced technician should be used to guarantee the motor will be repaired or maintained according to the manufacturer specs.

Outboard motors require much more attention during repair and maintenance than an automobile motor. It’s subject to harsh conditions of saltwater or swamp chemicals and it can take its toll on mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems that can lead to catastrophic failures.

Here at Dr. Outboard, we pride ourselves on being one of the best sources for outboard motor repair and maintenance. During our many years of experience, we have encountered different challenges for different situations on every motor. With over thousands of services done, we are confident we can repair and maintain any outboard motor to its highest specs.

Our prices are competitive but our advantage is the quality of service we provide along with the experience. Give us a call and let’s schedule your next maintenance or repair.

Electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic work-1
oil change
Oil changes and tune-ups
Whether your boat has 200 or 1,000 hours on it, an oil change is an essential part of a regular tune-up to keep the motor running smooth, but also saves on gas and expands the life of the motor.
Impeller maintenance
Abrasive sandlike material can cause the impeller to wear out faster. Impellers can also wear out by becoming stiff and brittle due to the motor sitting unused for several seasons or being exposed to heat. Regular maintenance can prevent permanent damage and avoid expensive costs of replacement.

hydraulic
Hydraulic and mechanical steering systems
Maintenance of your steering system should be completed at least twice per year to keep it in working order and ensure smooth, safe operation. Corrosion of the steering cable can cause stiff movements, seizure, and even total loss of steering control.
Grease and lubrication services
Protection against rust and corrosion along with fuel dilution is a number one priority for maintaining a healthy motor. Marine motors are constantly under load so keeping your motor lubricated and greased correctly will prevent catastrophic failures and should be added to your regularly engine check-up.

Spark plug changes
Spark plug changes
Spark plugs play a major role in starting your motor. Checking/testing your spark plugs every 100 hours is necessary to ensure your motor starts, as well as, replacing them every 300 hours.
Fuel filter replacements
Changing the fuel filter in your regularly scheduled maintenance can help eliminate performance issues and prevent major problems down the road. Regularly scheduled maintenance calls for changing the fuel filter every 100 hours. Dr. Outboard also recommends you change the filter before storing your boat long-term.

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE RATES

The best problems are the ones you prevented from happening – non problems.  Preventative maintenance, scheduled service, and 100 hour service: they all mean the same and that is the avoidance of problems and getting the longest life out of your outboard engine.  We all drive cars and know the importance of changing your oil, and so it is with outboard engines.

Instead of miles, we use engine hours to determine a maintenance schedule for boats. A standard engine service means changing your engine oil and filter, as well as, changing lower unit oil and inspecting anodes.

Outboards run differently than cars and need a different oil.  You’ll rarely go over 4,000 rpm in your car, but your outboard works best and produces the most power from 4,000 – 6,000 rpm. You need oil that won’t break down with heat and has corrosion inhibitors in it for saltwater use.

Your engine runs in saltwater and is subject to electrolysis, which eats away the metal. We use protection anodes, sometimes called “zincs”, in order to protect the vital engine components from being eaten away. Replacing your anodes is crucial to protecting the water passages and keeping your engine from overheating and being eaten away.

There are several fuel filters installed on a boat because clean gas is essential.  Replacing the fuel filters is key to good engine performance.  Spark plugs need to be replaced but not at every service; we inspect them and replace as necessary. Spark plug inspection alerts us to potential problems you may have with combustion.  Your water pump, sometimes called an impeller, should last 3 years or 300 hours depending on use.  A bad impeller will cause your engine to overheat so don’t wait for it to go bad before replacing it.  We want to prevent problems from happening, not cause them. Each manufacturer and engine family have specific maintenance schedules referred to as break-in service, 100-hour service, and 300-hour service.

SERVICES WE PROVIDE
Break In SERVICE

All newly installed engines require service after their initial break in period (usually 20 hours) to change the fluids that have become contaminated with metal shavings and to check all tolerances.

100 Hour Service

Every 100 hours or once per year your engine needs to have its oil and filter changed, anodes checked/replaced, fuel filters replaced, lower unit oil changed, spark plugs checked/replaced and mounting bolts tightened to specifications.

300 Hour Service

Every 300 hours or 3 years we will perform the same service as the 100 hour and in addition will remove your lower unit and replace the water pump.

Replace Water Pump

Replacing the water pup involves removing the lower unit, inspecting the drive shaft and water pump housing and replacing the impeller and or gaskets.

Diagnosis and Repair

Installing new parts, diagnosing engine and electrical problems and fixing all those annoying problems that creep up on boats is performed on a time and materials basis.

We’ve been providing our customers with high quality services for outboard motors for many years.
